Mercedes Benz Debuts New Line of Luxury Bicycles
If the only thing keeping you from riding to work has been your love of luxury cars, Mercedes Benz has a new line of bicycles designed to provide all the name-brand appeal that you’re used to with their cars. It’s not the first bike line from Mercedes Benz, but they have updated and expanded upon their previous offerings, with two kid’s bikes and a folding bike making their debut.
For the key focal point of the new line, the Foldingbike, Mercedes has been promoting the simplicity of converting the bike from its riding state to storage state. It takes only a handful of seconds and can be done without tools (which is good if biking to work leaves you without a second to spare). They’ll even provide you with a carrying bag—done in Mercedes Benz luxury style, of course—to stow your ride in once you reach your destination.
It’s nice to see Mercedes Benz offering up regal rides for bikers, but with prices that top out at $4999 Euro this slick new line is unlikely to convert many from car driving to pedaling, and we’re all about the eco-effect of more Americans jumping on their bikes instead of into their vehicles. Plus, the Mercedes Benz bikes don’t feature any particularly eco-friendly elements (aside from simply being bicycles), unlike our recent 5 favorite eco-friendly bikes, which make use of bamboo and electrical power to get you from point A to point B—and are a bargain compared to much of the Mercedes Benz bike line.
So if a luxury label is the only thing that will get you on a bicycle, by all means, pick up a Mercedes Benz bike (or, for that matter, a bike from Chanel or Hermes). We, however, like them best as eye candy (check out the full Mercedes Benz 2009/2010 bike line here) and will stick to bamboo bikes instead.
