Mercedez Benz 2010 E Class Estate

  • Official images of the forthcoming 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class have been leaked onto the internet ahead of the luxury sedan's planned debut in 2009. Known internally by its W212 chassis moniker, the new mid-size executive sedan from Mercedes-Benz adopts a more angular styling which tries to evoke the robustness of the mid-1980s - early-1990s E-Class range. Judging by these photos, we reckon that Merc's designers did it in a much less classy way, but we'll have to wait to see the sedan in real life for a safer verdict.

Girls and Sports Bikes

raven-and-cbr400
It’s not that many years ago that the sight of a girl on her own motorbike would have the male riders absolutely stunned to silence. Nowadays motorcycling is no longer the domain of the testosterone-fueled man and it is quite likely that you will see women out on the road on their own bikes, and a growing percentage of the girls are riding sports and supersports bikes.
I’m one of them!! And I love it!!
Now, I must admit that I’ve not seen many men stunned into silence when I’ve pulled up on my bike and taken off my crash helmet but I have seen quite a few chins hitting the floor! And it still makes me giggle even now to see it happen :-) and in all honesty it is still quite a common occurrence!

I am no longer the ornament on the pillion seat, and never will be again as I now HATE going on the back of a bike with a passion! I no longer feel safe, as I’m not in control of the bike back there.

Things are getting so much better for us girls now. Ever since the Fireblade was first introduced back in 1992, the motorbike manufacturers have realised that a decent power to weight ratio could result in smaller, slimmer and more powerful machines, which are perfect for us girls.

Now I may be too small height wise to ride a 1992 Fireblade, unfortunately at 5’ 3” my body is too tiny to reach over that huge tank safely, but there is absolutely no reason at all why I cant ride a newer Fireblade, as well as many other newer sports bikes on the market now.

I looked at the weight of the Fireblade over the years and have noticed that weight wise anything after the 2002 Fireblade is pretty much the same weight as my 1992 CBR400 Baby Blade! So guess what I want to own one day!! Now I know it will be a taller bike, but after having ridden a sports bike for a few years and getting used to the weight, having to have both feet flat on the floor, while preferable, will not be so much of a necessity.

Today’s motorbikes steer almost with a glance in the right direction and are incredibly light and powerful and they are getting so much smaller that they are almost perfect for us smaller female riders. Not long ago I saw a guy on Suzuki riding towards the pedestrian crossing I was waiting on and I was convinced it was a GSX-R600. It was only when it went past me that I realised it was actually a 1000cc bike! I was so amazed I had to wander back round to where he had parked up to make sure and yes, it definitely was the litre bike! I could not believe how tiny it was, I would easily fit on it!

The good thing about being a girl and looking at bikes like that is that I imagine that as we are smaller they would be less cramped for us to ride. The guy I saw on that GSX-R1000 looked as if he was dwarfing the bike and had knees and elbows poking out all over the place. I’m sure I would have looked much better on it :-)

The other advantage for us girls on sports bikes is that generally we are lighter as well :-) which means our bikes will go faster than the same bike with a much larger and heavier man on it :-) woohoo!!!!!

That’s the part I like.. Yes I may be little, my bike may ‘only’ be a 400cc one but with only 8 stone in weight on it she goes like hot stink with me on her :-) and she is so much fun.

I found this list of ‘recommended’ bikes for girls,
# Aprilia RS125
# Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade
# Honda RVF NC35
# Honda VFR400 NC30
# Suzuki GSR600
# Suzuki GSX-R750 K6
# Triumph 675
# Yamaha YZF-R6

but if you check out this post as well Bikes Girls Can Ride to see the kinds of bikes being ridden by girls right now. You will soon see we are not really limited with the bikes we are able to ride.

Choosing Your First ‘Big’ Bike will provide you with some pointers for when you are choosing a bike.

Plus now you can check out these posts about Ride Height Adjustment Kits for the different makes of motorcycles.

Honda

Kawasaki

Yamaha

Suzuki

So come on girls, get off the pillion seat and on to a bike of your own. The choices, bike wise, for us girls are so much better now, and with a little ‘tweaking’ the choices are widened even further in some cases :-)

You wont regret it, I promise :-)

Model of the Month - Alexandra Zerega

August, 2009

Alexandra is an accomplished model born and raised in California.
She's been on the cover of several import car mags and is now making her way over to the sportbike scene.

What is the strangest item you have ever been asked to model?
A snake. I was scared out of my mind.

How does the import and lowrider world compare to the sportbike scene?
I love that I got to wear leathers for my shoot. I thought that was pretty awesome. I have never worn anything like that for an import shoot.

What do you think of guys that ride sportbikes?
I think there is something kind of hot about them.

Finish this sentence:
The greatest lesson life has taught me so far is To never take anyone in your life for granted and to live your life honestly.

What is the best way for a guy to get your phone number?
That would be kind of tough since I don't give my number out!

How do guys send you running?
I hate to be hit on, so just about any pickup line would get them a peace sign.

When was the last time you barfed?
I would say a few months ago. I might have had a little too much to drink!

M&M to tap high-end motorcycle segment, may tie-up with a European bike manufacturer

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), which entered the two-wheeler market in India in 2009 after buying out the Pune-based Kinetic Motors, may soon enter the high-end motorcycle segment in the country. While Mahindra Two-Wheelers currently only has some scooters in its line-up, the company is said to be exploring the option of tying up with a foreign motorcycle manufacturer in order to get access to bigger, sportier bikes for the Indian market.

According to reports in the media, M&M is talking to some bike manufacturers in the UK and Italy, including Triumph and Moto Guzzi, both of which are keen to enter the Indian market.

Mahindra Two-Wheelers, which sold 10,000 units in January this year, has a sales target of around 15,000 units per month from April this year. In order to boost sales and enter the motorcycles segment, the company is working with Taiwanese bikes manufacturer, SYM, with which it’s developing an entry-level bike which will be powered by a 110-125cc engine. The company is also sourcing some components from China, in order to keep costs as low as possible.

Affordable Indian Superbikes from Mahindra Two wheelers?

Mahindra Superbike

Here is what Anand Mahindra, the MD of Mahindra & Mahindra, retweeted in response to a Twitter question asking him whether Mahindra Two Wheelers would launch an affordable super bike in the near future.

This was Mr Mahindra’s retweet “It’s coming! U won’t hv to wt long”. While this obviously could be a tweet for an impending motorcycle launch from Mahindra Two Wheelers, we’re wondering if Mahindra Two Wheelers really have any concrete Indian super bike plans.

Mahindra’s recent acquisition of the Italian engine firm, Engines Engineering and it’s tie up with Taiwanese two wheeler maker SYM only adds fuel to the fire. In the past, Mahindra & Mahindra as an automobile company has constantly sprung surprises with it’s bold and innovative indigenous products. Let’s hope that Mahindra Two Wheelers really have something up their sleeves.

Will Mahindra to Sym Cevalo in India?

Taiwanese two-wheeler manufacturer SYM will show its new bike – the SYM Cevalo 125 – at the EICMA show in Milan, Italy, next month. The company already manufactures the XS125 and Wolf 125 bikes, and the Ceval0 125 will be positioned at the top end of SYM’s 125s line-up.

Given the erstwhile Kinetic Motor’s connection with SYM, the Cevalo could be interesting in the Indian context. Since M&M has now taken over Kinetic and is currently selling scooters based on SYM machines, the company could possibly look at launching the Ceval0 125 in India.

The 125cc segment is one of the largest motorcycle segments in India and sooner or later Mahindra Two-wheelers would want to get into that segment. And with its contemporary styling, SOHC, 4-valve, air-cooled, fuel-injected, 15bhp, 125cc engine, and simple chassis and suspension components, the SYM Cevalo could be the right bike for M&M, with which they can step into the 125cc bikes segment in the country.

Over the next few months, it will be interesting to see how M&M leverages the partnerships which Kinetic had with companies like SYM, Hyosung and Italjet, and whether Mahindra Two-wheelers can take on Hero Honda, Suzuki, Bajaj and TVS etc in the scooters and entry-level bikes segments.

bike00231

A 29-year-old former banker has a dream: taking on the big guns of India’s two-wheeler segment through his range of mobikes, not only on home turf but also in Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

“We have just started and we will slowly pick up speed,” says Raja Bhadra, founder Chairman and Managing Director of Vibgyor Vehicles, a motorcycle manufacturing company set up on an outlay of Rs250-300m.

Bhadra’s fledgling venture will pitchfork him against two-wheeler majors Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto, promoted by two of India’s leading industry houses, apart from other established players.

Hero Honda, the market leader, posted a turnover of over Rs125,000m last fiscal, while Bajaj earned around Rs88,000m. Vibgyor’s “initial investment” of Rs250m-300m, including “a small amount” as loan from Syndicate Bank, pales in comparison.

But Bhadra is unfazed. “After two-three years, we will be competing with those brands in terms of sales and turnover,” he said.

Vibgyor, which has its plant at Dhulagarh in Howrah near Bhadra’s home base Kolkata, unveiled its first model, the

100cc Gallop, in March — targetting cities like Lucknow and Ahmedabad.

The bike will be launched in unspecified locations in Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand in August, with Guwahati next in line.

Bhadra has also entered the Bangladesh market and is set to ride into Nepal, apart from planning exports to Sri Lanka and East Africa.

“We have already sent our first consignment to Bangladesh. We want to expand there,” Bhadra said.

“We also have plans to export to East Africa via Dubai and talks are on with companies in

Sri Lanka.”

The company, part of Vibgyor Allied Industries that has diversified business interests, is also eyeing markets in Argentina

and Peru.

Bhadra indeed has big plans. The 100cc bike will be followed by a 150cc (Shark) and 125cc (Hunter) models later this year.

“The 150cc variety is a premium category bike with which we plan to enter the tier I cities by November,” he said. The Hunter will immediately follow the Shark.

Vibgyor is banking on lower prices and free accessories to penetrate the smaller cities. Bhadra said the bikes would be at least Rs.6,000-7,000 cheaper than their equivalents from the Bajaj Auto and Hero Honda stables.

Explained company Vice-President Mrigen Banerjee: “100cc customers aspire for certain features but cannot always afford these. We will give free of cost additional features like gear and mobile indicators, which other manufacturers charge for.”

Another route to carving out a market is whittling down logistics costs: Vibgyor has started scouting for land in Gujarat to set up a Rs500m-600m crore assembly line unit to cater to the state and to markets in Punjab, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

“These are prime two-wheeler markets. It is cheaper to transport motorcycles from Gujarat than hauling them from Bengal,” Bhadra rationalised.

Vibgyor has roped in former Indian cricket skipper Sourav Ganguly as brand ambassador. Ganguly, along with actor Hrithik Roshan, had once endorsed Hero Honda motorcycles.

So where does he see his company going? Bhadra says Vibgyor is looking at a turnover of Rs2500m in this fiscal, and Rs3500m in the next.

“We have set a sales target of 100,000 bikes (mix of all variants) this year, 140,000 for next year and 200,000 a year from then onward.”

Born in West Bengal, Bhadra stayed away from his family business and worked in a bank for two years before riding off on his own.

The shark uses a 142.6cc engine and produces 13.05PS of power at 9500Rpm and 9.6Nm of torque at 7500Rpm. At Rs. 49,990/-, this bike takes the crown of the most affordable 150cc bike in the country. The Shark has been completely developed by Vibgyor Allied Industries’ R&D team.
